History: Ben's Life
Personality:It's incredibly easy to write Ben off as being psychotic. Ben suffers from disorders, but his mental stability is linked to multiple things. Ben wasn't always broken and hard to reach. Ben used to be a bright and vibrant young man. Ben would put on shadow puppet shows late at night in an attempt to make them smile. He used to engage his unit in happy stories of a place where they could all be happy. He even had their unit leader Zack smiling and enjoying the story. He taught them how to look beyond Manticore and the horrible things that were associated with it. Ben taught them how to look for a better life in their imagination. It ran wild as a boy. So much so that he often thought that the people in charge of Manticore would drink their blood once they were no longer fit for duty. This was not the case though. Ben tried to help his family cope with the horrible things that were done to them. He wanted to protect them. It was in his nature to make them smile.
When Jack started seizing one night it was Max, Zacl and Ben that crowded over his bed worried about him. When the janitor introduced them to the Blue Lady it was Ben who became incredibly attached to her. He was looking for something to hold onto that weren't just stories he invented. He wanted something real. The picture of her they were given became a sort of idol for Ben. He set up a place on the roof for them to show their faith (to make her stronger) by giving her teeth from their mouths. They had "services" late at night when the guards thought they were asleep. Ben held onto this faith so tightly that he started to doubt them. When the Blue Lady didn't protect Jack or Eva he rationalized it as them not being strong enough or deserving of her protection. He couldn't fathom how someone would let the things that happened to them actually happen.
Ben had a savage side hiding underneath his child innocence. Most of the X5's did though due to the DNA inside of them. They were trained and taught to kill. They were soldiers from the moment they were born. They hunted an inmate down as apart of an exercise. Ben claimed that the exercise exhilarated him. He had never felt so alive. He finally felt like the predator that they were training him to be. His life suddenly made sense. Ben has always seemed to find some sort of sense in the violence. Destroying something makes sense to Ben. It's where he finds peace.
After Jack was taken away due to his seizures another piece of Ben broke. He couldn't seem to fathom why the Blue Lady had allowed this to happen. He believes she would protect them. The only rational way for him to make it through this was to acknowledge that they didn't have enough faith. They didn't show her the respect she deserved. Ben blamed himself. He tells Max when she has him handcuffed that she didn't protect them because they had let her down. Ben truly believed his own stories. Right down to the last detail.
Once the escape happened this left a very fragile Ben out in the real world. He was still reeling from Eva's death, what happened with Jack and everything Manticore had done to them and lead them to believe. This world quickly began to no longer make sense to Ben. It completely broke the fragile humanity that he had left inside of him. Sometime in 2018 Ben's mental health got worse. It's unknown what triggered him, but the words Duty, Discipline and Mission seem to hold great significance to him. He marked the inside of the Space Needle with those words as a constant reminder for him.
What makes Ben kill?
Ben knows what he is. Ben's a soldier. He's a hunter. He's a predatory. He's a killer. Ben came to terms with that at some point and he's tried to embrace it. At the same time there's an incredibly human part of Ben that understands what he's doing is bad. It'd be one thing to just send the people he kidnaps out into the wilderness, but Ben gives them a weapon. He's recreating the exercise from Manticore that made him feel alive, but he's also trying to stop the cycle. Ben tattoos them with his barcode as a way of disciplining him. Ben wants that discipline. He doesn't have it in the real world. He wants to be stopped. He's begging for someone to put an end to the violence. That's why he hunts "himself" and gives them a weapon they could overpower him with if they were clever enough.
Ben's faith in the Blue Lady has only gotten stronger since Manticore. He wants to make her believe in him again and that's where the killing comes in. It's his duty to make her stronger. He needs to show her his faith is strong. His mission is clear and he fully intends to follow it.
He's not completely hopeless though. Ben shows some signs of life when Max catches up to him. She makes him face what he's doing. He's in the process of giving up his recent captive when he sees the words on his wall. Duty. Discipline. Mission. Ben snaps. The lucid composure he had acquired talking to Max fades. He takes Father Destry out to the forest to complete his mission. When Max breaks his leg he turns into a wounded animal. He tries to lash out and push her away when she gets close, but she ignores it. Max holds Ben close and he begs her to make sure Manticore doesn't take him back. Despite the fact that Ben believes Manticore was the only place that made sense he truly doesn't want to go back. Perhaps this Ben just wanting to put an end to all the madness he's been experiencing since Manticore. He begs Max to kill him and she obliges.
Underneath Ben's mental instability there's a boy who was trying to believe in something better than Manticore. There's a boy who couldn't find a home or a place out in the real world. Manticore ruined Ben. Faith ruined Ben.
Powers/Abilities: What Ben's capable of with his abilities back.
Appearance: Ben is somewhere at 6'1. He's lean and muscular. He has green eyes and short brown hair that he keeps spiky. Not much is seen of Ben's fashion sense, but he is still a soldier. He didn't shed that identity like most of the X5's when they escaped. He dresses incredibly simple. Black slacks and gray t-shirt. He has a puffy black jacket that he wears to combat the cold temperatures of Seattle. You can tell by looking in Ben's eyes that he's not okay. He holds a lot of pain there.

A twig snaps in the distance. Ben can hear it. He's half a mile away, but he can hear it plain as day. He moves to the left and doesn't hesitate when he comes to the dip in the landscape. He picks up speed and goes up. He lands in a crouch a the base of the incline and listens again. The noise is moving farther and farther away. He's running fast. He's running out of steam though. Ben is closing in. He's making progress which means he's the man is growing more exhausted. His faith in the Blue Lady is weak. It has to be the answer. His abilities give him a certain advantage, but he's just one man. This man has weapons and an ample head start. He's getting nowhere fast. He's in a rush and that's going to be his downfall.
This is where Ben feels the most at home. He feels comfortable in the dirt and with the sky above him. It makes his blood pump. He can finally breathe when he's hunting something down. It's in his DNA. They're killers. They were designed for this. So many of his X5 brothers and sisters had forgotten this. They chose to ignore those parts of their DNA. They blocked out their true nature and ignored the urges that circulated through most X5's. The urge to hunt and the urge to destroy. He's going to do just that to this man. He's going to destroy him. Human's are fragile creatures. X5's are designed to be strong. Powerful. That's how Ben feels out here. He's in control.
Ben comes from the man's right side and side swipes him. They tumble to the ground and Ben's back on his feet before they hit. He's got a smile on his face. This is his wheel house. His home. He doesn't speak. There's no need to taunt him. He blocks the wild swipe with the hunting knife. It's forced from his hand and Ben slams his head forward. This knocks the man off balance. His knee lifts to push into his stomach. The man doubles over and Ben wraps an arm around his neck. His hand cups his chin and he uses it at leverage. There's a swift crack and his body goes limp. Broken neck. Ben exhales completely and drops him. He bends to pull the necklace off him and tilts his head.
"You're with her now." He pats his chest and rises back up. He pockets the necklace and looks the area over. He's not done.
